How to install pfSense via USB Installation Media

This tutorial demonstrates how to install pfSense using a USB memstick on Qotom mini PCs. Access BIOS with Delete key, launch boot menu by F11. Please use USB2.0 flash drive and USB2.0 port to avoid installation problems.

  1. Power on the mini PC, continuously press the Delete key to enter BIOS Setup.

  2. Save and exit BIOS after checking boot settings, then repeatedly press F11 to open the boot menu for USB boot selection.

  3. Download installation image: Get pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz from official website:https://www.pfsense.org/download/

  4. Extract the compressed file, you will obtain pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img raw image file.

  5. Prepare bootable USB drive: Use Win32DiskImager to write the .img file onto your USB flash drive.

Important Recommendation: Use a USB 2.0 flash drive, and plug it into the USB2.0 port of the mini PC. USB3.0 may cause recognition or installation failures.

  1. Insert the prepared USB drive into the mini PC, boot from USB, and follow the on-screen prompts to complete pfSense installation.
